I was super excited to try this after seeing the idea on the Rachael Ray show. It was one of those "why-didn't-I-think-of-that?" moments! I just had to share here on Joyously Domestic! What a fun idea for summertime drinks - alcoholic or otherwise. This is more of a method than an actual recipe. And, it's pretty simple, but does takes a little planning. You'll need to prep and freeze the cubes in advance, obviously. Once the cubes are frozen on a sheet pan, they can be popped into a plastic zip-top baggie, then placed back into the freezer until needed. Kids and adults alike love this idea. They keep drinks super cold without diluting them.
No more watered-down drinks from using traditional ice cubes. The watermelon will subtly flavor your beverage. And, you'll be able to nibble on the watermelon as you drink or when your beverage is gone.
Ingredients:
Seedless watermelon (half or whole - depending on desired amount of cubes)
Directions:
Cut your melon into 1 1/2 inch slices. Then, cut off all of the rind (including the white part).
Cut each slice into cubes roughly the size of ice cubes.
Place cubes in a single layer on a baking tray or sheet pan.
Wrap the tray loosely in plastic wrap and freeze for several hours (or until cubes are completely frozen). Serve in your favorite summer drinks.
If you don't plan to use the cubes right after they're frozen, seal them up in a zip-top bag!

ReplyDeleteBelinda ... hope you all enjoy them! I made lots so I've had a Ziploc baggie with them in it all week since this post. Throughout the day, I stop at the freezer and pop one or two in my mouth. So refreshing and tasty! :) Thanks for commenting! Let me know how they turn out! :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks super delicious. I always have trouble making a drink and then not drinking it fast enough before it melts. Now I will be able have a drink and not worry about it getting watered down. Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your feedback. I'm planning on doing some balls of watermelon and cantelope this summer like this for a party ... just using a melon baller to shape into balls, then freezing. We love this idea, too! :)
